About Sara: My superpower is putting people at ease & catching natural, flattering moments in the most gorgeous light I can find (or create). I photograph all sorts of people doing all sorts of interesting things, and I've been doing it professionally since 1991 (while still in high school), shooting headshots and bands. After college I began shooting for record companies & fashion designers as well as weddings and lots of other things.
Now I live in Sonoma County, an hour north of San Francisco. My clients are individuals, families, magazines, musicians & small businesses, and usually about 5 weddings a year. When I am not shooting or processing images for clients, or wrangling my kids/dog, I make art.
About Portraits: Each session includes a mixture of directed portraits & spontaneous documentation of life's unpredictability. Full sessions usually take about 1.5 hours. For headshots and individual portraits, this gives us time to include some outfit changes and to explore some different lighting and location options. For kids and families, this amount of time allows us to weather mood swings as well. I offer mini-sessions twice a year, in April and October. Both mini and full sessions include all the edited digital files.
About Weddings: After more than a hundred weddings, documenting them feels like second nature to me, yet each one still fascinates and inspires. As a visual artist I have always loved pageantry, and I love to witness times of great transformation and emotion: liminal moments. I back this creative energy up with solid professionalism and a knack for making people look good. My approach is a mixture of photojournalism, classic portraiture, and the unexpected eye of the artist. I often bring a second photographer if the size of the wedding warrants it. The digital files are always yours to keep.
Fine Art Work: My book works are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Library of Congress, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and special collections at many universities including Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and Columbia. If you're interested to know more, see my Curriculum Vitae, and my art website. While my artwork and my work as a portrait photographer are different, my endeavors cross-pollinate.
